Preparing Your Yard For Septic Tank Installation

Blog

Are you having a custom home built on some land you bought? If you are, you also may have to install a septic system if the land can't be connected to a city's water and sewer supply systems. You'll have to start planning and preparing land for the installation because you can't simply throw a tank in the yard and start using it. You have to ensure the absorption field (also called the leach field or drain field) is adequate for the job, that tank pumping services won't have trouble reaching the tank, and that you don't inadvertently ruin the tank via poor landscaping.

Choose a Location That's Easy to Access

When you have a septic tank, the processed liquid will drain out into the absorption field. However, solids stay in the tank until the tank is physically emptied by a tank pumping service. That service need to be able to access the tank, meaning the tank has to be near a road or driveway where the service can park its truck. The tank also has to be close enough so that the hoses from the truck can reach it. Don't hide the tank in the woods, thinking it needs to be hidden. If you're getting an underground tank, it's already going to be hidden by the ground, and if you're getting an aboveground tank, the trees aren't going to provide much cover anyway.

Plot Out Where Landscaping Can Go

Landscaping over a tank and in a drain field is tough because you really can't do much with the land. You can't grow edibles, and you can't place many different plants in the area because their roots will affect the tank. Garden centers, extension websites, and septic companies will all have advice on what plants work best over and near the tank and on the drain field.

Amend Soil in the Absorption Field

When the liquid drains out of the tank, it will go into a field meant specifically to let the liquid absorb into the soil and drain away. The soil in the field has to be well-draining. If it's not -- if you have a bunch of clay, for example -- you need to amend the soil to make it drain better. Otherwise, you'll have pools of liquid forming on top of the saturated soil, which can cause health problems if not controlled.

A septic company, like Honest John's Septic Service Inc, can help you plan a lot of this out. Contact them to get more information on how best to go about preparing land for tank installation.

Healthy Sanitation and Hygiene Practices

My name is Angie, and welcome to my blog about sanitation and hygienic practices. Proper sanitation measures are very important so that individuals don't become ill due to diseases that can be contracted through unsafe and unsanitary conditions. I frequently give speeches in and around my city about proper sanitation measures and how sanitation can be improved. I wanted to be able to reach more people, so I decided to write this blog. While reading these articles you'll learn about many aspects of sanitation, including solutions, technologies and management. I hope that when you read my blog, you'll discover the importance of sanitation and how the proper methods can keep you and your family safe.
