4 Reasons Your Toilet Is Getting Backed Up

Blog

When you flush your toilet, you expect everything to go down the toilet. You don't expect to have the waste sit there or come back up a different drain. When your toilet gets backed up, there is generally a reason why that is happening.

#1: Blocked Drain

One of the most common reasons your drain is backed up is something in the drain keeps the waste from going down. This can happen when something gets down the drain that shouldn't be there. For example, maybe a kid dropped a toy down the drain, or perhaps you accidentally dropped some jewelry down the drain. If something got into the toilet drain that wasn't supposed to be there, it could block everything up and prevent waste from getting out of the way.

You may be able to dislodge the object with some use of the plunger, or you may need a plumber to come in and retrieve the object.

#2: Vents

Second, your plumbing may be getting all clogged up due to an issue with your vents. You probably don't even realize it, but your drainage system is actually connected to a series of vents. These vents help provide the air pressure needed to get your waste moving. When the vents are blocked, you may hear a gurgling sound that is created by a vacuum pressure issue. You will need to have the plumber go and check the plumbing vent and unblock the vent. In older buildings, the toilet vent may be connected to other vents, and those may need to be unclogged.

#3: Tree Roots

Third, another big reason why your plumbing may get all clogged up is because of tree roots. Tree roots are opportunistic and will go whenever they need to go to find the nutrition and water they need. They are capable of getting into drainage and sewer lines, blocking and clogging things up.

#4: Septic Tank

Fourth, if you have a septic tank, the issue may not be with your toilet at all; it may be with your septic tank instead. If your septic tank is full and needs to be pumped, your toilet may be getting backed up because there is nowhere for the waste to go. Or you may have a broken ejection pump in the tank, which can lead to toilet backup issues.

If your toilet is backed up, don't stand for that gross mess. Call in a professional toilet backup service to get things flowing again, no matter the cause of the issue.
